Using the Internet to Create Efficient Supply Chains

San Diego Bay Dock -M.Abel

Products move across the globe at a speed unseen at any time in history. Much of this movement is directly derived from improved manufacturing methods mixed with telecommunications technologies that coordinate supply chain mechanisms to create more efficient processes. Fatorachian, et. al. (2013) studied 67 companies to determine what impact the integration of Internet technology and its computational power has on the supply chain. The study helps companies push for greater technological development using the data processing methods of the Internet.

The supply chain is a necessary component of moving products and equipment to various locations where they are put to use keeping the economic engine running. Sometimes this may be within a city, a country, or across the globe but many of the processes have similarities. According to Gereffi (1999), the supply chain integration can be a main source of providing competitive advantages based upon networked relationships.

The supply chain ensures that each of the components are connected together to reduce waste, improve speed, and meet timeframes. The supply chain can be quit complex and take into consideration large and small shipments. It is therefore important to have the right kind of information that integrates all of these components into a more integrated network. Generally, the more integrated the network the more cost effective it can be and this impacts the profits of a company in a big way.

Enhancing the supply chain requires better collaboration, cooperation and understanding of different partners within the network (Kandemir, et. al, 2006). This integration often requires higher levels of software, information, and connecting systems that encourage the components to work well together. When a product is tracked and the systematic efficiencies are improved across multiple companies there is a natural reduction in cost and an increase in service.

Most of us are familiar with tracking at UPS and Amazon. We experience supply chain technology when products are scanned in as they move from one point to the next. Each time the product is scanned the system can tell at what leg and juncture of the trip it is at. Customers may find this a benefit but companies also get the benefit of monitoring many shipments to reduce costs and lower the level of resources expended on logistical management.

Those companies that can integrate their supply chain have much higher payoffs than those who don’t (Cagliano, et. al., 2005).  This is not an easy process and often requires a systematic redesigning of the process to integrate high technology information with ground based systems. The development of high data and fast information transference systems that can manipulate the functioning of physical systems takes time.

According to the authors when a company can do this well they are able to generate significant benefits.  The authors found through their analysis that the use of Internet technology improved upon supply chain integration, logistics and returns processes, order processes, procurement, planning synchronization, inventory control, overall production, and customer relationship management. This means that the implementation of technology systems furthered significant strategic goals within companies. Business leaders should consider the improvement of their systems and updating of technology when possible.

Memorial Day Events in San Diego-Spend Your Time Wisely

American Flag

Everyone loves Memorial Day as a day of festivities and fun. It is also a day of sorrow and the many souls sent to the reaches of some other place so that each of us can enjoy life as we currently know it. On Memorial Day every minute is borrowed. Borrowed from the man who perished in a trench, the one who sunk at the helm of a ship or the secretary that burst up the stairwell in a mad dash to ensure the next order was telegraphed without delay. Minutes don’t come cheap on this day and every clock hand was earned through blood, sweat and tears. Memorial Day is just one day in the sequence of days borrowed and each generation will need to add their contribution to keep the clock working properly.

The festivities are part of that day of souls and every laugh, social gathering, bbq sandwich and bratwurst should be a feast; feast for being in the moment of life. Some will remember those who left us a future while many have already forgotten. Some heroes were well known and some died unknown but each willingly traded their time. Memorial Day is a day to eat, sing, and most of all spend that borrowed time well.

If you are looking for events San Diego has a smorgasbord of options and opportunities. Many of the events are free while others will charge you a pittance; a few may charge you more. Ideas range from walks in the part, memorial services, placing wreaths on grave sites, visiting historical landmarks and social parties. Perhaps you prefer to donate.  Choose one but most of all just remember-that all time is a gift from one generation to the next.

Hobby: What to do with old furniture?

Old furniture is something that we throw out from time to time. Perhaps we recently upgraded our décor and bought a new set or we have that piece or two that no longer fits with anything else we own. It could be scratched, nicked, stained or suffered from years of abuse and neglect. Before you throw it out you may want to consider a fixer up project like the one I completed with an old cabinet.

Before engaging in saving a particular piece of furniture ensure that it is solid and only has cosmetic issues. If you desire to cut wood, replace parts, and do other things there is a higher level of skill involved. Basic sanding and painting will work for most projects and leave you with higher quality products. Sometimes you may need to buy a door handle or other small item that may be missing to finish it off.

Those cabinets that are solid and have a stained finish may need to be sanded. The manufacturer is able to sand them down and cure them in a way where not much is going to stick. By lightly brushing the entire piece with sand paper you are able to prepare the piece for painting. The wood granules become rough and raised enough to hold the paint.

Once the process of sanding is complete you should put on at least two coats of paint. In my case, I used mocha but you may want to try a different color. The purpose of two coats is to ensure that everything is covered uniformly. Sometimes trying to put too much paint on at one time can cause dripping or running which leaves little bubbles in the paint.

You may want to end with a satin finish. It will help to make it look nice and smooth with a slight shine. The satin spray will also protect against moisture and wear and tear. Other products are available that will better coat the top for protection against condensation, water, or other scratches. This depends on your planned usage and the amount you want to spend. Assuming that you own the cabinet the total project will cost around $10.

People engage in home projects for all types of reasons. It may be a hobby, something to do, or a home business. In my case, I desire to ensure that all of the mismatched stuff thrown into my home office matches so I will be going piece by piece until they are finished. This cabinet will be used for a t.v. stand and free the surface space of my desk for other uses.

Steps 1: Take off knobs, decoration, etc…

Steps 2: Sand surface to ensure paint sticks or nicks are removed.

Steps 3: Spray paint, stain, or paint with a brush.

Steps 4: Repeat step 3

Step 5: Allow to Dry

Step 6: Use satin finish.
