Manufacturing Rises to Highest Point in 3.5 Years

Manufacturing is heating up and cranking out new products at a rapid pace. According to the Institute of Supply Chain Management, the August PMI rose to 59% (1.9% increase) when compared to the previous month’s numbers of 57.1%. The improvement is the highest experienced in 3 ½ years helping support the smooth running of America’s economic engine. Basic materials have a fundamental impact on the growth of manufacturing within their associated sectors as the products make their way throughout the national supply chain.

As the country seeks to capitalize on its new found growth it is important to ensure that a positive business environment employs and develops matching competencies in the manufacturing labor pool.  Economic expansion will have a difficult time continuing unless highly skilled and motivated employees are available to fill future employment opportunities.  Companies should bolster education and training to secure a ready labor supply and raise income based on performance.

Of the total of 18 industries measured 17 achieved a level of growth. They are “Plastics & Rubber Products; Furniture & Related Products; Fabricated Metal Products; Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Wood Products; Printing & Related Support Activities; Miscellaneous Manufacturing; Paper Products; Petroleum & Coal Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Chemical Products; Primary Metals; Transportation Equipment; Computer & Electronic Products; Machinery; and Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components (1).” In competition with cheaper foreign imports, the Textile Mills is the only industry that predictably lost ground.

The type of industries experiencing growth is fundamental to improving manufacturing in other economic sectors. The basic supplies of manufacturers become resources for other arenas that further refine the materials into a final exportable product. As the fundamental industries grow it is also possible to envision secondary manufacturers picking up pace in the near term.

Backlogs of orders increased 3% showing demand is high in the near term and pushing opportunities for growth into the next quarter. Exports of manufacturing rose 2% and imports rose 4% enhancing an already voracious supply based appetite. Companies are starting to invest in the economy again and attempting to expand their capacities. Orders are matching expectations and some companies will need to wait to obtain supplies for expansion. Company strategic planning will become essential to capitalize on the improved market.

If you read the business news on a regular basis you may also notice that consumer confidence and spending are also rising in a way that supports sustainable growth.  A caveat is the increasing imports over exports. As American companies become stronger, nimble, and reach cost parity with low cost foreign suppliers it is hoped the numbers will slowly shift in the other direction. At present, if these basic materials are manufactured into higher quality exports the economy may raise its financial profile.

To Ping or Not Ping Your Small Business Website

Driving traffic to a website is a process of learning and experimentation. The marketing industry is always changing and even though online advertising is starting to take preference there is plenty of room for those who know how to advertise online in short order. For small businesses that don’t have oodles of dollars to market their products then knowing how to market your business on a shoestring becomes important. 

Pinging was once a great way to attract new visitors before there was hundreds of millions of websites. It still holds some benefits for letting search engines, aggregators and other auto update functions to know that you have updated your site. Pinging notifies these services to come and crawl your website to index your site faster. 

The downside to pinging is that it takes effort to ping the services every time you update your page or site. I wouldn’t necessarily suggest it either. If you update regularly try pinging once every 1-3 days but don’t go too far beyond this. It will help in avoiding being dropped by servers and search engines as spam. 

There are advantages to pinging your website for greater exposure in unison with other methods. Using different avenues to reach your customers has an advantage in drawing interested visitors (Laroche, et. al. 2013). Using ping services in addition to other pathways such as directory submissions, Google AdWords, and Forum engagement to reach target search markets is beneficial.

Labor Day Events: Festival of the Sail and US Sand Sculpting Challenge

Festival of Sails provides a lineup of tall sail ships that make their debut throughout the day at the San Diego Maritime Museum. As a bonus, just a block to the South, is the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge. You will need to pay to enter both events but if you plan on taking up the better part of the day you might as well splurge on a holiday. Broaden your mind with a little art and history. 

San Diego is known for its tourist sea coast offerings and summer sun activities. Events and attractions in the downtown area draw interest and visitors. The events provided during the holidays are some of the best I have seen and makes for a lively weekend.  

Festival of the Sail:

Festival of the Sail hosts a large tall ship parade. It is even possible to get aboard the ships if you come early. As ships pass the festival there are mock cannon battles of smoke a booming attacks. Between watching the action you can walk around the booths, kid’s area, beer garden, and local goods. On the day I went there wasn’t a working ATM within the sectioned area so I would suggest bringing money with you. Found a pair of polarized sunglasses for $15.

US Sand Sculpting Challenge: 

The US Sand Sculpting Challenge brings together professional sand sculptors from around the word. Each artist works within the sand platforms to build amazing 3D works of art. To see the detail and fine art chiseled into sand is an awe-inspiring event. Live bands, booths, and food will be accompanying the sand castle competition.

The themes of the events offered along the coast is a nice touch. San Diego, with its year round warm beaches and long maritime traditions, mesh thematically with the two events. Few things are more attractive to visitors than sand and sails. It is California thing.   

Another positive aspect of hosting events in downtown San Diego is that it helps draw visitors while branding the area as attractive for families that live here. The abundance of lively events attracts new talent to the area.  Savvy professionals to progressive workers enjoy having things to do on the weekends.

It all ends at the close of business Labor Day and then we all go back to work. Get out and enjoy the San Diego sunshine while experiencing art and history.
