Economy Grew Just A Little More Than Expected 2Q 2021-The Digital Economy and Manufacturing Can Grow Together

Can development
 in internet/information push manufacturing
to innovate with co-development technologies
(virtual and physical adaptations)?
Internet Association

The US Economy Grew a little more than originally thought (6.5 to 6.6)on consumer spending and exports. We can increase those export numbers and reduce those supply lines back to U.S. if we seek to protect our future economic authority. We have opportunities to put ourselves above the Chinese system while attracting more international investment. Finding our path into the digital economy will likely define what that landscape looks like for a lot of other countries. We have the U.S. dollar and underlining post WWI economic structures that can push our growth into new platforms with the right support. Watching the factors that contribute to the Digital Economy and the digitization of the American economy will help provide some insight into our most advantageous economic steps moving forward.

"The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 6.5 percent. The update reflects upward revisions to nonresidential fixed investment and exports that were partly offset by downward revisions to private inventory investment, residential fixed investment, and state and local government spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, were revised down (see "Updates to GDP"). See 2nd Quarter 2021 (Second Estimate).

What I would like to have a better understanding of is how environmental factors pushed us into the Digital Economy during and after COVID. The latest estimates are from 2019. See US Department of Commerce June 2021 Digital Economy Release states that the digital economy is 9.6% just behind manufacturing at 10.9%. Calculating the digital economy is relatively new and we may not be accurately reflecting actual activity with relatively new metrics (meaning these metrics were built off of older ways of thinking about the digital economy and what category we reflect information. There is some subjectively in absolute numbers!😂 LOL I know, "stupid!") What we can say is that the digital economy and the manufacturing economy in the modern era are becoming integrated and intertwined leading to a duel cluster builds of networks and manufacturing to develop faster growth in next generation manufacturing technologies. See Theory of Innovation Transactional Clusters.

An example of how to use
multi clusters with different
components to create
specific line of industry
development often leading
to breakthrough industries
and products.

You can see the upward trajectory of the current definition of digital economy that indicates is growing influence in our marketplace. Covid may be pushing us into the next digital platforms where digitization and manufacturing develop together creating whole new products we haven't yet developed for commercial use (See Delta County Multi-Cluster New Industries and US. 2021 Infrastructure Bill).

We might want to consider the possibility of new tax structures that will turn companies doing business in the U.S. to moving their HQ to the U.S.. We complain about taxes anyway and its complexity so there may be some benefits to considering alternatives. While the calibrated tax number might rely on different metrics to determine a "hometown" and "international" tax rate a company would experience a single rate (...unless there is a good reason for exemptions/reductions such as budding industries we want to foster. I'm not saying its a good idea. Just saying its an idea. I didn't look at it long enough to know if its a good idea. 🤷) See Calibrated Tax Structure

Pentagon Confirms Last Plane Out of Afghanistan-Did We Plant A Seed?

General McKenzie discusses the departure of the last plane in Afghanistan. Its interesting because were able to turn a pretty difficult situation (collapsing of Afghanistan Army) leaving us no time to depart in an order fashion. We did a great recovery and as the Taliban filled the power vacuum we are able to create "understandings" with them that while we may have fought in war there are opportunities to secure the area from ISIS-K infiltration.

The "understanding" that the Airport and equipment would be left to them as long as they secured our departure (I bet ISIS-K didn't' expect that!😲). That wouldn't happen unless there was a diplomatic effort to secure the safe departure of others that decided to stay and/or leave at a future date. You can review the diplomatic effort by the world community to secure free passage.

This are interesting times. Diplomatic efforts will take time but the final days of conflict has show it is possible to come to some "understandings" under the right circumstances. What the Taliban must ask themselves now is "What is next?" Will they emphasis the Islamic thinking on economics and society building (which Afghanistan needs) or continue out of interest, versus necessity, to take the jihadist approach (which will perpetuate the death and destruction they have experienced in their own lives and generations of their children.) Their choice will determine Foreign Direct Investment opportunities and in turn whether they will walk closer to examples set by Malaysia or the ones by Iran; or something new.

How they decide will determine the ease and/or difficulty the country will face in future relations with the world community. This is their chance ensure their country is free from ISIS-K incursions and on the path to have an opportunity to see if their brand of Islamic state (i.e. there are many versions of the same state throughout history but each failed because it overemphasized the past and didn't look at how to create Salaam (Peace) in the future. The ultimate goal of the three leading monotheistic religions).

Either way.......I think our Military and Civilian leadership did a great job turning lemons into lemonade (short term strategy) and with luck lemon meringue pie (long-term strategy). To be honest we can say the Taliban was open to a peaceful exit and that will likely factor into new strategies and some of our options in the future. I think we planted a seed but we can't say for certain if its a fruit bearing tree or a life choking weed. 🌱

You can follow General McKenzie on Twitter. Every culture has its seasoned warriors that balance knowledge, experience, and their strengths to make their country a little better place during their time in service. Their job is to protect while others have jobs to grow the economy. We are a society of different roles and parts. You can read a little more about him at U.S. Central Command.

Thursday August 19, 2021 Escanaba City Council Meeting- Tourism Up 40%!

Keeping up with the local news makes you an informed citizen that understands the happenings and activities of our town. Mostly its fun to watch (Its probably not for everyone!). I've seen some great city management and poor city management and Escanaba seems to be well managed.  Unfortunately I was traveling and working on some projects so didn't get the time to watch prior. Budgets...who doesn't love budgets !😱  ok....a couple of thoughts.....

From a process standpoint it appears that if the amount of money needed is over a certain amount  (I think they said $6K but I'm too lazy to go back to look.) above and beyond the budgeted amount it needs City Council approval.

Octoberfest was approved and the proceeds go to the United Way. Public Safety indicates they don't have any issues with the event so that is good to know (Just have a designated driver. 🚨👮🚓). It is a good cause and charities help people feel engaged in fun activities matched with contributing to something that is important. This is another example of using event management to attract interest. See Seasonal Visitors Escanaba/Gladstone.

Tourism is up 40% and just like Mrs. Moore stated people are coming to experience the outdoors. It is possible to capitalize on that trend. See Delta County Adventure-Venture Capitalism and Delta County as a Digital Nomads Land and Tourism to Enhance Esky

Of course we may want to consider attracting people to develop the downtown through DC Downtown Rejuvenation  by adjusting Delta County (Escanaba and Gladstone's) public webpages and public relations/marketing approaches through the Availability of Financial and Non-Financial Info.

In the future, if we could also build other industries by attracting Great Lakes Distribution and Shipping matched with Start Up Firms Design and Small Batch Manufacturing we may be able to create DC Multi-Clusters that lead to resilience and sustainability in a shifting global economy to ensure local residents can find jobs and maximize opportunities. This is part of an exploration of a larger theory on Transactional Economic Innovative Clusters that explores the possibility of returning investment, manufacturing and intellectual capital back to the U.S.

(Sorry thought experimenting trying to close a loop on a theory. 🎓⚓📚🔭🔬🔍⏰💻)

97 Nations Announce Afghans Can Leave-Global Community Supports Peaceful Evacuation

U.S. Department of State (U.S. Foreign Policy Arm) indicates that Taliban and 97 other countries have come out with a joint understanding to allow Americans, other countries, and Afghanis to leave the war torn country safely. You can watch National security adviser Jake Sullivan's message below. That is some positive news and hopefully it will allow for dialogue with Afghanistan and encourage them to take a pro-social stance toward the world (....versus going in the route of Iran. It should be noted there are different brands of Islam based upon which school of thought one follows. There is a very rich cultural history that parallels our own with examples of people who showed mercy and kindness as as well as strength and fighting. Some versions focus more on the fighting aspects while others on the peace and admin side of things. A group can be defined by what it focuses on and how it seeks to establish a position. In ISIS-K they are focused on Jihadism more than Admin. The Taliban are left of that and recognize their desire to build an independent state. So how they choose to approach their future is an interesting thing to watch. Their logic will be even more interesting. They may focus on administration and development or they may focus on fighting. The early members of the group were students and sought to stop abusive warlords. It may be now a little different. So time will tell what happens here and the route they will take. One will likely determine how well they connect to the international community and the other how many conflicts, sanctions and condemnations they receive.)

ISIS-K is an organization that focuses its direction outward in an expansionist manner. The biggest fear would be if ISIS-K carves out territory and in turn recruits to that territory. Leaving a power vacuum is going to be a big problem and thus we will either want to 1. )Keep a presence (doesn't appear there is any more desire to do that. 2.) Give it to the Afghanistan government (crumbled in the first few days because the structure was based on American support. I think it was more of a psychological thing because they knew we weren't standing arms length away.) 3.) ensure the Taliban fill the void (to block ISIS-K and international recruitment. They are Pushtuns...and I suspect don't want foreigners to establish themselves and compete for position. From their perspective they fought two wars over it so I'm not sure they would appreciate others making Afghanistan their home unless they are there to fight for them.) and 4. Let ISIS-K or other entity take the area (Definitely lets avoid that!🙅🚫🚷).

The best of all the options at this point would like be #3 based on what we might understand now. There are so many risks either way but we might want to keep some level of connection to the Taliban because Russia and China are trying to turn it into another chess piece in the global game. That will carry some risks in the future so we will need to factor a little of that in when deciding what type of relationship we want to foster/not foster (If you don't know...go to the strategy with the most options.). .

The many countries involved show solidarity to protect life and send a signal to the Taliban that while U.S. is withdrawing we as a world community would like safe passage and no bloodshed for people trying to leave. There is another message in that which is not written explicit but more implicit that is supported more by the action then the words. That if the Taliban act in a civil manner and are able to work with the world community there may be a few doors cracked open for future discussion. (🤷 I don't know...its highly subjective and easy to misinterpret. Like it most likely should be!)

Sorry rambling......

You can see the US State Department Announcement

"We are all committed to ensuring that our citizens, nationals and residents, employees, Afghans who have worked with us and those who are at risk can continue to travel freely to destinations outside Afghanistan. We have received assurances from the Taliban that all foreign nationals and any Afghan citizen with travel authorization from our countries will be allowed to proceed in a safe and orderly manner to points of departure and travel outside the country. We will continue issuing travel documentation to designated Afghans, and we have the clear expectation of and commitment from the Taliban that they can travel to our respective countries. We note the public statements of the Taliban confirming this understanding." U.S. State Department Announcement, Aug 29, 2021)

ISIS-K Commits Attack-Risks American Backlash Through Adaptive Strategies

Afghanistan is changing before our eyes and how it approaches issues will determine what it will become and its options thereafter. The Taliban have a responsibility to end the attacks by ISIS-K and ensure that Americans (and helpers) can leave without further conflict (It may make sense for them to open the door as wide as possible for people who want to leave.). There are differences between the Taliban, ISIS and Al-Qaeda and sometimes they may fight with each other. Lets throw out the discussion of Al-Qaeda because they don't really fall into the serious threat category in Afghanistan. We are then left with ISIS-K and Taliban as appropriate discussion points.

Taliban vs. ISIS

They are said to not like each other but do share some similarities of fighting style and learned techniques meaning at some point they came from similar background (i.e. fighting against the Soviets and the skills learned there. Low cost and highly mobile.) However, Taliban is about Islamic law in Afghanistan and can be seen as purists that want to fight locally with national agendas (Connecting the tribes to build a nation). ISIS-K is more expansive and a global brand that recruits to create a large empire (NBC has a pretty descriptive article What is ISIS-K? Islamic State group's affiliate behind Kabul airport attack).

Service Members Hurt

12 service members were injured fighting to help evacuate Americans and Afghanistanis now that the U.S. is withdrawing from the area. The lives were lost in honor and doing something honorable and we should applaud the bravery of those members. The civilians are another tragic collateral of war. War is ugly and the lives lost are some of the best (Our soldiers put themselves on the line like this and sometimes we don't think about that before we march them into war. Leadership, of either party, should do everything in their power to keep them out of the war-but make them the most effective force when they must engage.)

(Take a moment in silent honor).

Strategies Forward

There are short and long term strategies. Obviously we are dealing with short term issues at the moment and we keep in mind long term strategies of fighting/peace, engaging/withdrawing, supporting/undermining, etc... for a future discussion.

Here are a few things we should consider....

1. ) Talk to the Taliban about going after ISIS-K, going after them before they get to the airport, and allowing for a temporary extension of withdrawal as long as its for evacuation purposes (They follow Islamic law which also includes the sanctity of life.  Under the right circumstances they may just agree to save the airport from being taken by ISIS-K. Agreement being to give them the airport after the last plane leaves and we are fully withdrawn)  There may need to be a temporary level of coordination that won't sit well with most people after a lengthy 2 decade war. Its important to remember the Taliban are a loose group of squads/tribes/villages connected to a central leadership (likely will become more formalized in the future as near term semi-official government.)

2.) Putting more boots on the ground to create a perimeter around the airport, additional extraction points, hidden extraction points, etc... Provide air and video reconnaissance, allow groups to crowdsource ISIS-K movements, and do whatever we need to do to allow everyone to extract safely regardless of deadlines, fighting, and potential risks (A week of everything we got on ISIS-K might change the scenario and let others know.....we don't play around! Then leave letting the military be the last one!) Consider special tactical forces (special forces) to create a softer perimeter to disrupt incoming squads before they get near the perimeter outside the airport (airport is last perimeter).

At this point the Taliban may not see a reason to help the U.S.. They were fighting for decades but they were fighting between two formal entities (It doesn't seem that way but you have to understand their perspective and sense of equal legitimacy. Why their hope for "normalization" with the world community is a strong motivator for pro engaging behaviors.).

ISIS-K is slightly different entity and right now the Taliban are likely thinking ISIS-K are putting pressure on the U.S. and they have no reasons to intervein; at least for the moment. However, now that the Taliban are trying to form their own government ISIS-K will become a threat (a real one) to their legitimacy and represents foreign influence in their country (This is a big thing for them!). Afghanistan risks becoming a place where ISIS-K might seek to carve out territory (and keep an airport) now that their hopes in Iraq and Syria have diminished.

You can read a June 2021 UN Security Council Report on ISIS-K, Al-Qaeda and Taliban

I want to think about what has changed in our world since 1970's. Some of these groups have been able to coordinate across the region and attract people to set up a new country in Iraq and Syria (Think about it! They created a whole country where one didn't exist except in history.) Big Data will be helpful in understanding macro trends and macro movements that allow us to better handle difficult situations that are amebic. We are about 10 years off from much better surveillance abilities (maybe only a few years away.) Our adaptive ability can only happen through innovation (innovative cluster for military and economic purposes. A cluster transaction theory) and the power of human capital (Eliminating hate, institutional bias, and the derailing of human souls from their full potential and destinies. Its an uphill battle convincing people some behaviors are bad for everyone!).

Side note:

We hope and pray everything turns out well and peace will be the ultimate goal for everyone. We pray for our troops and those who have been hurt. We went overseas to fight for our values and our freedoms because someone attacked us. In the future, diversity will save us as a leading nation that becomes a beacon for religious tolerance, integrating of different peoples, and unity of national purpose in business, military and civil affairs. We can create a bulwark against such destructive global influences by practicing engagement and tolerance here at home ☮. Many of our communities (by racial and religious demographics) are separated because we haven't moved past the racism/bigotry dynamics of the past (This is why we shouldn't support aggressive bigotry or those who utilize our differences to divide our communities. No matter who their race, religion or politic). Since the Capital Riot attacks we now see the the greater danger to home grown extremism and hate based behaviors and not developing policies that thwart extremism from a more universal method (of any race or religion. See Hate Crime Reform Michigan.)

These are the times we should take heart and rejuvenate our American spirit to spread the message of freedom. We have history and purpose as the world's leaders. We can teach others about our central values. Our soldiers fought and died for an ideal. We should uphold those ideals in our families, friends, communities, states, and political parties. There are few things more motivational than the The Star Spangle Banner

...........

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Corruption in Detroit FBI and MSP Raid Officials Home-The Saga Continues.....

Linked to Detroit Free Press Article
Corruption is a drag on economic activity and generally makes regions/countries that have higher levels of it weaker and poorer. Corruption has been a problem in the making and the way we relate to each other, integrate our lives (and lifestyles) and develop a shared sense of national vision (i.e. its that darn Universal thing that keeps popping up!).

This has been going on for a long time and officials throughout the system didn't have a moral problem with being on the "take". Any source of money and/or other resource was stolen from those who needed it (i.e. schools, children, city services and residents) and put in the pockets of officials and businessmen/women (...not necessarily all local).

Its easy to point fingers isn't it? That system exists within a larger system of people who have been encouraging and profiting from such behaviors for a long time (There were a lot of blind eyes going on.). It also exists because of long-time divisions among the American people (I think some of us are still struggling with the why we are foot dragging rejuvenating our American brand through shared focus on national goals that transcends racial and religious boundaries. Many of these communities I have met and lived with and they want to be valued and part of the solution. That is why we should keep pushing closer to our ideals. 🤔)

Over time more and more people learned that working within that system under "who you know versus what you know" rules was how to get things done. The official and unofficial are still problems and there is likely much more to it than that but it goes back decades into the union-management relationships (hmmmm seem so similar. Maybe I need new eye glasses. 😲🙊). More effort is needed in teaching business students ethics to create a general sense of appropriate rules beyond the law. The law is limited by its applicability. (See Teaching Business Ethics and See Beyond Simple Belief and See Moral Courage and Ethics and "Ethics")

Things in Detroit didn't get done unless you were known through social and political circles as a trusted member. That meant people had to know you on a personal level to do business of any significance . The bidding process didn't mean much as a legal formality to circumnavigate the general rules to favor friends and associates. While we might think that corruption put the city into bankruptcy it was actually segregation and its long subconscious legacy of withdrawal (Its an observation and not a fact. The "facts" are more complex and likely to be a more academic discussion than anything else because we haven't moved beyond current racism dynamics so we can discuss it in a more emotionally removed manner. Its no longer Us vs Them but "We" versus ourselves. Our perspectives, social networks, economic activities, clubs, etc.. are intertwined where we all have some responsibility over defining and building our future together. We-conomics is a third book in the series that is based on transactions and shared future perspective that create organic oriented economic structure development. Maybe it is our collective conscious that is tapped to overcome shared environmental challenges? I think of collective conscious a little like how ants build bridges  based on an internal ant algorithm even though they weren't trained to do it. Maybe they were trained...I'm just making a point. 😐 )

Connections ranged from Detroit to Chicago to Vegas to all over the place. One could almost trace them back to their origins if they had a framework for seeing and processing the data (There are a lot of cities that have this problem but the bankruptcy in Detroit highlighted its uniqueness because it represented a turning point in our perception of decline, corruption and what that might mean for the rest of the country. We are being chased by China so we might need to move into higher performing economic platform.). What you will find is that acceptance of key officials allowed the behaviors to become psuedo legitimate tipping aspects of the local economy (remember its Detroit and surrounding) into the shadow market. It had no choice but to go bankrupt as one factor sought to increase costs and the amount that could be pocketed while the population continued to declined because of gutted services leaving no money left in the bank. In other words, they took Detroit down to its knees through a resource draining system that left it starved for new capital (What must come through new business, residents, housing, and quality of life. See Perpetual Sustainable Development)

According to Erik Gordon, a professor at UoM Ross School of business tates, "Clearly, there is a culture of corruption that doesn’t stop at the city line or the county line," (Snell, Rahal, & Hunter, 2021, para 8).

These activities are typically occur through social connections so they are often hard to discover and find until you have someone on the inside. With city administration there are lots of different records and typically once outside law enforcement is aware and are motivated to take a look they begin to discover the processes used. Bankruptcy create a greater urgency to understand (See Pension Fund and Leadership).

What we often find is that as corrupt networks become solidified they create mechanisms to control and enforcement their environment. There are different levels of sophistication but in the end some basic mechanisms exist. For example, in one subsystem (i.e. business) you would see a hiring/hiring arm (for politically connected officials), a firing arm (for those who don't follow the rules), an enforcement arm (keep people in line), mechanisms of taking in and washing money (perhaps multiple vendors purchasing from each other and then spending it for fun to clean it. 😬) (The shadow market runs just behind the official market but diverts resources toward key individuals and often underground institutions.)

Many of these systems follow our traditional systems and are shadows of how we might do things in the "legitimate" arena. The black market has their own stakeholders and followers and over time certain activities and mechanism form even if they aren't officially labelled as such. To sort of understand how they function you have to test multiple ways of how information, resources, people, etc... move throughout the entire system (I'm not the expert, but I suspect we can play the odds of the concept being in the ball park. In other words we can construct a better understanding of whats going on but it takes decades of research to support theory fully. Its a blog...I'm just using general knowledge to sort of create an understanding of perhaps how something like this might work.)

"Since 2008, more than 100 politicians, union bosses, bureaucrats and police officers have been charged with corruption in Michigan's eastern district, including more than a dozen politicians and contractors in Macomb County."----If you remember these counties bickered constantly during bankruptcy (maybe...racial, political, etc...differences) but then we find they are like giddy in love teenagers gabbing in the media. 🤷 I guess they were splitting the lunch bill?

IMF Cost of Corruption

We must fight against corruption because the actions of the selfish slow down the entire economic system in Detroit and in the nation. There are studies that show (don't rely on one study) that 1% change in the Transparency International's Perception of Corruption Index (CPI) has a 17% on real per capital GDP (See Research Corruption and Economic Growth). (That transactional theory I'm working on is based in part on how corruption slows down transactions and increases costs between entities. That is sort of reversed for how to increase transactions through accurate and useful information that leads to innovation. There is some similar types of research at IMF that discusses leakages and general costs See Cost of Corruption). Imagine what we could do and the tax revenue we can gain by stamping out corruption?

In life, there are those who have a moral compass and there are those who don't. People make learning mistakes, growing mistakes, and stupid mistakes. These can be expected as a natural course of life. However, when cultures of corruption take place it often takes motivated individuals working in their collective interests to knock a larger shadow market down. Everything starts with a single corrupt transaction that is mimicked and spread among a central source of prospectors. It becomes extremely difficult for people within a system to see they are like fish in a fish bowl  that can't see beyond the glass (This is more of a perspective thing about outside anchors for judging behaviors and actions.). In other words, it becomes increasingly difficult for people from the inside to see things the same way as people from the outside. Integration and economic engagement can increase opportunities and create shared perspectives by lowering the boundaries and create more shared societal anchors. Building back neighborhoods through small business development is a start in drawing and attracting diverse talent.

Side note.....

Here is a fundamental problem. Corruption occurs through greed and poor understanding of the bigger picture of government. I've seen where police officials (I'm talking a specific department with close personal social connections with the originators of the hate based behaviors) tried to ethnically cleanse their community (They don't see it that way I'm sure. It was all ok as long as he only brought White friends to town but as soon as there are any Blacks, Asians or Arabs we now must act to protect our town from "terrorists" and "extremists". Let's forget the actual definitions and just blindly associate anything different as evil and then go act on it without thinking!💁 ). While they don't see it that way they blindly followed the direction of their leadership (non official and unelected leadership) and began to spread rumors and engage in the coordinated attempt to target "Muslim" family. While these behaviors may have become "normal" for this group and agency they are serious violations of the Constitution and indicate corruption. While I had hoped that they would have learned on their own and taken direction to change their course they have instead embedded themselves further with this group and turned a blind eye to increasingly open displays of behaviors that could lead in some circumstances to intimidation, hinting of violence and  intentional character assassination. I know that things are not that simple and there are lots of lots of things most people weigh before they take an action and/or justify an action.  If Detroit was any indication of how we think as a society it looks like we need outside influence for accountability (The benefits of having multiple law enforcement agencies that have a more objective point of view and are willing orient around the basic tenets of the Constitution. The Constitution is a super cool document that 99% of people have heard of but have not idea what in it. If the Constitution is the central charter that makes us American then its intentional circumvention should give us another hint and certain value systems.). We have a responsibility to maintain the health and integrity of our business and enforcement systems. Once you follow someone home to silence them, bear false witness, engage in open intimidation tactics and blindly support your local hate group you open up a whole different can of worms. What we do next is depending on our personal and national value systems. We should ask our politicians, judges, and institutional leadership what their vision for the country is? Hopefully its not to put the wool over their own eyes while the nation must find a way to compete against a changing global landscape running only 4 out of 6 cylinders.
