Jimmy O’s The Del Mar Local's Restaurant and Bar

Del Mar Race Track-On Wall at Jimmy O's

Jimmy O’s is a restaurant and bar located in downtown Del Mar California. Within a block of the oceanfront and  shopping district the bar is seen as a popular and convenient destination. As a sports bar it is designed with television sets lining the bar and a coastal rustic atmosphere that defines the nature of the business. It is a place where flip-flops and jeans fit right into the environment. Leave that sports jacket at home.

They are known for their appetizers such as Korean short ribs, calamari strips, and the house Ahi Napoleon. Soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers are some of their other main offerings.  Most items on the menu are under $12, which makes the restaurant affordable to most patrons. I ordered a fish taco as a quick bit for under $8.00. It was good and I’m not a fish taco fan (no tomatoes please).

On most days, Jimmy O’s is open from 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM but on weekends, the times change from 11:00 AM to 2:00 AM. Fridays and Saturdays offer a D.J. starting around 10:00 PM that provides for music until the early morning hours. Tables are cleared when the D.J. starts his music and by 11:00 PM, the place is a full-blown dance club on an open bar floor.  It can get quite crowded on a weekend nights so make sure you come early.
Service is friendly and polite which matches the atmosphere of the place. The owner came over and asked if we would like him to take our groups jackets and items behind the bar for safekeeping. Not that one would expect to have a problem but when places get busy you never know. Serving staff were equally polite and prompt. They made their way squeezing through the crowd with experienced ease as they served guests.

One of the best ways to enjoy a Saturday evening is to come and eat around 8:00 PM and engage in conversation until the tables are moved out of the way. Once this happens you must make the decision to stay for dancing or head home because the place fills up quickly. The open area atmosphere truly makes the place convenient for multiple uses and they seem to be maximizing their opportunities.

Make sure you read the parking signs well. Locals tell me that tickets are common in Del Mar and it is wise to find a parking lot. Police make their rounds at approximately 11:00 PM in hopes of avoiding seniors and ticketing the young people just coming in. If you read and watch closely, there should be no problems. Avoid the parking right in front of the building if you are staying past 11:00.

Don’t miss Tuesdays- Kareoke with $3.00 Drinks and Taco Specials.
