What is the Armani Brand and Who Buys their Products?

Armani is known among the fashion industry as one of the top designer brands that says quality, excellence and feat. Even the logo, an eagle looking off to one direction, is designed to portray this strong image. Started in 1975 by Giorgio Armani the company has grown worldwide and provides for a timeless collection that includes luxury garments, apparel, jewelry, and other accessories. How did the company get started and what type of person buys these products?

Who is Giorgio Armani?

Giorgio was a window dresser in 1964 and with his increasing knowledge of fabric was taken in as a designer for men's clothing. In 1975 he moved on and began his own label in men's clothing and eventually made his way into womenswear.

By the 1990's he had over 200 stores and multiple lines including Emporio Armani, Armani Jeans, Armani Exchange, Armani Exchange A/X, and Armani Collezioni. Sales top $2 billion annually.

You can read his biography here.

Who Buys His Products?

Empario Armani is focused on the upper class and have reached at least a mid-level management with disposable income to spend. Armani patrons are challenge oriented and moving up in stature and position. They are innovators and strivers who want the image that goes with it. You can read in greater detail an audit of the brand here.

Those who buy Armani are a unique crowed. According to the Pew Research Center the wealthy feel they are more happy, financially secure, less stressed and enjoy their jobs more than others. To be wealthy most Americans believe it would take an income of at least $100,000 a year. The majority of respondents to their poll feel $150,0000 for a family of four is the average of wealth.

This same group is likely to be college educated and own their own homes. A market study helps us understand that the Upper Class often shop for specific brands and know a little more about the products than other classes. They have searched online and are looking for specific high end products they can wear in public that make them feel and look good.

For people who purchase this product, it is important to maintain status. The upscale image the product provides gives them a sense of achievement. They are young, fresh, and wealthy! Those who wear this brand often catch the eye of others who also seek to emulate the same successes in their lives.

Lack of Civility? When Arrogance Creates a Toxic Environment

Arrogance-Big Ego Riding a Small Pony
We have watched the news and experienced arrogant behavior at the top. We may wonder how some people can actually believe they know it all and are all to everything! In their own eyes they cannot make mistakes and treat others as pawns to their own malignant personality. Research in the The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist helps us understand the problems arrogant people create that is only a matter of time before real damage occurs to an organization.

What is arrogance? It is a person who engages in behaviors intended to exaggerate their sense of superiority by putting others lower. They want to seem omnipotent and invincible to others but at a deeper level they are covering feelings of inadequacy.

Higher levels of arrogance are associated with lower self-esteem, lower general intelligence, poorer performance and lower team building. It is the opposite of what it intends to portray because it acts as a cover for deficiencies.

The pitfalls to arrogance is the toxic environment it creates where collaboration turns into stress, poor relationships, and in-fighting. As the arrogant person continues to engage in maladjusted interactions with others they end up creating fight and flight responses that lead conflict.

It is important for organizations to work as a social group. It can be argued that their fundamental strength is the ability to pull people together to complete important work. Arrogance destroys social cohesion and creates a whole host of functional problems.

Arrogant leaders have a difficult time learning from their mistakes or gaining feedback from their environment. They become pathological in their thinking and are blindly willing to take large risks that lead to costly mistakes. Critical thinking is nearly non-existent.

The impact on poor relationships, toxic environments, and heightened risk-taking has serious consequences for organizations. While these leaders are hired for their skill they are often fired for their personality. By the time they are gone the damage has already been done and it is up to the next person to pick up the pieces. Arrogance and confidence are two separate personality traits and hiring managers should be aware of the difference.

The 0% Unemployment Rate

Why is 4.5 % the lowest sustainable unemployment rate? According to Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen the rate is slightly below what is considered to be possible long-term and he Fed has decided to try and ease their balance sheets and try and create a neutral stance on the economy this year. What does this rate mean and why is it so important to economic decisions?

From an economic standpoint 5% is seen as the lowest sustainable unemployment rates based on natural economic equilibrium. Unionization and forced employment policy can raise this rate but there are unwanted effects on society that include inflation and an inflexible market with little cushion. An inflexible market at a 0% unemployment means there are few opportunities.

Different economists will put this number at different places based on how the economy is currently acting. They do agree that there must be a number above 0%.....duh! As employment levels decrease to say 1 or 2% there will be a corresponding increase in the cost of goods and items as inflation speeds up. More money in the market leads to increases in prices as demand outstrips supply.

An unemployment rate of 4.5 % allows for enough freedom for workers to move to other jobs, seasonal employment to pick up for the holidays, and a level of demand for employees so wages can rise. The movement of people and jobs will allow for a cushion in unemployment where there are opportunities for employment exchanges of new, old, and transitioning employees. A 0% unemployment rate means there won't be significant increases in economic output or market cushion for economic cycles.

Why Do Some Colleges Have Higher Student Retention?

Student retention is a big issue for colleges that are seeking to balance budgets and ensure that students have the persistence needed to finish their courses. A study in the Virginia Social Science Journal reviewed data from 367 U.S. colleges and universities and came up with a few reason why retention stays high. According to their work, retention is impacted by percentage of faculty with doctorate degrees, SAT scores, and admission acceptance rates (Pfitzner, Brat & Lang, 2011).

Doctoral Rates: As more doctors teach courses they raise the quality and prestige of the university. The level of knowledge and ability of the courses rises and students are more likely to stay focused on their education. The study doesn't say if this is a cultural or a knowledge result.

SAT scores: The higher the SAT score the more studious and hypothetically the student. Admitting more students from the top of the SAT score spectrum means these students are already highly engaged in their education and more likely to complete their programs.

Admission Acceptance Rates: The lower the admission rate the higher the retention. When students are selected for their skills and abilities they are more likely to have what it takes to succeed in school. The university chooses who they want.
