Controlled Dive Emergency Ascent

As a group of people we dove around wreckage form an old lumber mill. We didn't find much but I did get a solid look at some well worn boards. My mind started thinking signs, arts and crafts. Perhaps a little graphic painting may do wonders. Ok...sorry I was sort of just talking and talking as my artistic side kicked in.  We did practice some emergency ascents. This is the last of the last of the last resort when someone is out of air. There are dangers if you are deep enough of getting the bends. At 20 feet it won't hurt you but at deeper levels you could have a problem. Make a humming sound and allow air to move in exhale. Stay under the speed of your bubbles.

Whats in a Metric? Common online Measurements

What is in a metric? Online marketing makes collecting information and data much easier than before. Services like Google Analytics are easy to use and help gain insight into your website. Knowing which type of website statistics you should be looking at and what they mean can make a big difference in your management choices. Three major statistics are used as basic methods of evaluation of how well your website is doing in terms of visitors, who is leaving, and who is sending. Lets look at three big ones.... 1. Total Visitors 2. Bounce Rate 3. Referral Sites Each does something a little different but can give you some insight into how marketing works. Total Visitors provides information on how many visitors you receive on any given day. If you compare month to month and year to year you should find your visitors increasing if you are doing things right. If you are not you should find your general numbers decreasing. In general, the more visitors you have the more people kno

Brighten Your Day with Fresh Air and Country Pics

The country offers a world that few city dwellers will understand outside of the pictures and movies view. It is a place where things are a little slower, people a little more intimate, and the land fresh with foliage. It is a world that once engulfed all of America but is now a declining lifestyle as people move toward bigger cities with more amenities. I like to ride my horse Sass down some of the back wood farm trails and see If I can find anything interesting to take a photo of. I think this old farm house, flower and church look great. Diving in Low Visibility Conditions

I'm not an expert diver. As a matter of fact, I'm just starting to dive. A group of us went out diving in fairly low visibility at the beach in Marionette. It was a fantastic experience because not only did I get to try new environments but I also worked more on staying close to a group of people.  We "buddied" up so that we didn't lose each other. If we lost each other then it made sense to stop, wait a minute and go back to the surface. Diving with others improves safety and the ability to see more things. Having a buddy to dive with is very helpful.  As I now know. One of my swim mates had a leg cramp and I had to drag him by the back of his respirator about 150 feet. Not easy! The biggest thing I needed to get over was being well under the water and seeing the surface above you. You sort of feel a little trapped under water. Swimming with others makes a difference. As you get more experience that natural nervousness will go away. \

A Few Seconds To Writing Headings that Sell

Marketing isn't an exact science and writing effective headings and ads takes practice. Some consumers respond to certain key phrases and ideas more than others. Much is dependent on the product, market and current emotional state of the receiver. We can say that advertising is a form of communication that allows people learn about the benefits of products to their lives. As a communication tool it is important to keep the customer's needs center stage while drafting your ads to ensure the most beneficial information is received. At times, we see complexity or desire to explain ideas as fully as possible. That doesn't always work because people can easily become confused without context. It is hard to create context within a few seconds.  That takes a little while to create and often isn't always possible in sound byte fashion. Keep the message as simple as possible. A small small phrase or concept makes all the difference in clarity. If you want to highlight some a

Woody's Golf in Delta County Michigan-A few holes for a few bucks!

I went to this place called Woody's Run outside of Escanaba. First time I have been there. The greens were well taken care of, the fairways offered some challenges and the staff were friendly. This is a mom and pop family run golf facility run out of a barn. Despite its small stature the experience was definitely worth the price. Two people can play and rent a cart for $30. Golf was one of those sports for the elite because it took considerable resources to not only manage the course but also to have the leisure time to engage in it. If you are working for your daily bread it isn't likely you will have the time or money to play. ...but that is changing. Most people can afford to play from time to time. Maybe not everyday but if you have gone to the movies lately you may find the cost comparable. Places like Woody's are very affordable for the average person. There are some benefits people should think about while playing golf. That includes relaxing in the outdoors, c

Fishing Near Escanaba River Entrance

I'm out here fishing and searching for supper. I'm using a crawler harness with a little worm on the end. Very bright and colorful. Trolling around the mouth, by the pylons, into the weeds and lurked on all the other boats. A few fish jumped out but no luck for me. :( Printed pictures can be purchased and profits go to orphanage. Isolationism or Globalization? Anyone Know What the Right Approach Is?

There are arguments to be made for isolationist policies as well as engagement policies. The problem is that over the long run choices create outcomes that don't often have the most value. Isolationism means a country stays out of the policies of other countries while a more engaging strategy seeks to influence the outcome of policies. While politics is one thing the economy is another. Getting connected to other nations leads to growth over a longer period of time. It isn't wise to isolate for too long because economies become less competitive. Once they lose their market position they may not be able regain it quickly. Isolation limits the influx of new money and ideas. The best economies put themselves at the center of the information and resource chain. It is where everything else sort of gravitates toward. Resources, ideas, people, money, etc... come to the center of the supply chain.  With more and more data being collected it is possible to track how resources are

Success Careers Comes With Others-Say Please and Thank You

Success is not often a stand alone affair. Over the years I have realized that when you want to achieve some goal in your life you are inevitably going to rely on others. From the people who give you tips to the people who actually open the doors open for you there will be others on your path. Treating people as though they are important is a sign of a mature mind. It seems sometimes like the lowest common denominator of behavior is becoming common. This isn't the best approach and those who have the capacity to see the bigger picture should make a habit of treating people well. When we are positive and friendly we find new resources being pushed our way. People have a willingness to help others. They won't do this for very long if they don't feel as though their efforts are appreciated. Say "Thank You" and "Please". People like to hear these things. They want to know that they made a difference and they helped someone.  These old rules haven'

Social Media in the Marketing World

Social media in the marketing world is becoming ever more important. It is helpful to remember that social media is useful because it deals with groups of people that share something in common. The more highly motivated the groups is the better the marketing potential. This means that social media is about getting in with groups of people so they can hear about the value you provide to them. They must see it as something beneficial to their lives and identities. Social media is increasingly becoming common as technology changes and gives us greater access to others people who share interests. We are getting broader and deeper in our connections. They may be a local sports team or a global network on the Dark Net. People rally around interests, causes, beliefs, and blogs. Networks are formed by people who share something in common with others. Tapping into those networks for marketing purposes opens up new opportunities. Lifestyle groups are particularly helpful because people'

How to Know When You Need a Quick Break

I'm a physical machine when I want to be! Lap swimming in the morning, hiking in the forests, horse riding, and then drills for diving in the evening. Crash in bed at mid night and up and at it by 5:30 am. Of course I have to get a lot of other work done with my professor job as well. Therefore, there are times when your body says, "wow...slow down and take a day off". This usually happens when your body gets over trained. I know this because I typically fell like my legs are very heavy, I'm dead tired all day, my body is sore, and I sneeze a lot. My body is simply tired. I used to try and push my way through it and in many cases it would go away. Yet I wouldn't see the real results of working out like that. I found that if I took a day or two off my body was in better shape and I could see the results of my workout. Rest is an essential part of working out. It is an absolute necessity if one wants to see real gains. When your body begins to tell you to

Using Processes to Improve Your Writing

Writing can be very easy or it can be complex. How you view this depends on whether you see writing as a tool or more like an art form of communication. Once you have a rudimentary understanding of writing as a communication tool you can fulfill its function but may not be very effective in motivating people to act. Following a process will help you reach more people and spark their interest. I'm probably never going to be a great writer of magnificent prose but I can still improve on my writing by following a simple process. The process allows us to think about the various aspects of writing and come to a better outcomes. 1. I would look at the audience in which I am to write. This means looking what the audience like, their buzz words, and how they relate to the world. The deeper you can move into their collective understanding of life the better you will be able to write for them. 2. Understand what media you are going to use to reach them. If you are writing a blog, newsp

How Might China Try and Capitalize on The Trade War to Set Up New Alliances

China is trying to limit some of the damage of the trade war with the U.S. by inviting other nations to increase trade with them. What they used to get from the U.S. they are trying to get from other nations. That will change how products and information flow throughout the world. A polarized world of military and commercial activity may be the long-term result of long-term trade adjustments. 1. Gap filling suppliers are likely to be permanently part of the Chinese economic engine once they begin working within the country. 2. China may have reached a point where it no longer needs to rely on the U.S. but move toward creating its own global network of commerce. 3. China will seek out countries that align closely with its own culture in terms of fundamental beliefs creating political connections along with financial ones. 3. They are capitalizing on low cost production enhance the reach of its market approach by a sector of countries. There are a few things China may not have

Why Big Data is Changing What We Know About Society

Giving off Data while Fishing :)😬😲😀 Big Data is here to stay and its not going to change anytime soon. Information about us is everywhere in cyberspace and never truly gets deleted. Our lives are recorded into little 1's and 0's that technology can analyzed and discover. We collect information on keystrokes, buying habits, political affiliations, Interests, friends and one and on. The information is extremely helpful for marketers but likewise very important for understanding societal trends. Imagine if you tapped into a few large databases that companies or government entities have been using to store information and in an instant you can determine a persons income, medical records, hobbies, interests, friends, etc... You may know more about them then they know about themselves. That is real power! On a macro level you could analyze people's opinions and come to conclusions about how different beliefs are impacted by culture. Those countries that are cultural ge

Hiking Through Hiawatha

Its early in the morning and the mosquitos are on the hunt. Like bloodsucking bats they attack me with brutal rage! Hiawatha offers miles and miles of rugged trails. Up and down hills. If you feel confident in your navigation skills you can go off the beaten path and follow the streams down to some very nice rivers. Now that I know some solid bearings I would love to come down again in a few days and follow the river all the way up to any waterfalls. Printed pictures can be purchased and profits go to orphanage. Trolling Around Escanaba Harbor

Escanaba Bay is a great place to sail, fish, and enjoy water sports. One of the areas main attractions is its waterfront. I took my little dinghy and went a few hours trolling around Escanaba Harbor.  I was surprised I still had about half a charge left. Didn't catch anything but it was really sunny out so many of the fish may have went to deeper waters. It was well worth the effort. :) Printed pictures can be purchased and profits go to orphanage. What do Abusive Families Look Like? Its All In How They Handle Conflict

Raising awareness of abused kids. So what do abusive families look like? They look like your and my family. The only way to tell from the outside that the family has taken on a dysfunctional nature is to see the patterns inherent in the way they handle conflict and dissent. It takes a level of insight and openness to the possibilities but the signs are there for anyone to see. First, no family that has engage in dysfunctional behavior will admit their behavior is a gross violation of human rights. They don't have the self-reflective ability to do so and are buried in their patterns and live in a self confirmed system. They created a reality that can't be challenged from the inside. Second, abusive families are all about power dynamics. If they can't control you they will seek to damage you. In healthy families people can voice their opinion and their voice will be respected. Families that want control will either snub reasonable concerns or "shout down" di

Show Down with Iran-Steps to Resolution

We are back at it with Iran our cultural nemesis that seems to be prodding and poking us at every turn. When they have an opportunity they seem to work within the shadows and seek not to be held accountable for actions that are against international peace. We should understand that Iran is a different ideology that often sees itself as a victim to world aggression. Their cultural and ideological beliefs makes them look like an in-out group to the outside world. Their fear of the outside world drives much of their actions but they have crossed the line if they used military tactics to communicate their needs. No action is not really an option at this point without Iranian adjusting its ways. Before responding with a "heavy hand" lets try and consider an approach that allows Iran to acknowledge its wrong doing and move more towards peace. First, I do not believe Iranian people are evil or crazed lunatics. They are a self interested people like everyone else on the planet. The

Great Day of Sailing-Learn from Different Skippers

The wind blowing, the good spirited competition, sail boat races are fun and exciting! If you also like to sail you might want to be involved in the Escanaba Yacht Club. It is a small but very well run place with friendly members.  Its a small community of sailboat enthusiasts. Like many other clubs they are always open to new members. You may want to come down for their Wednesday night races at 6 (skippers meetings) or  7 (the races) to watch. Here is their link  https://escanabayachtclub.com/index.html If you are serious about sailing you will want to go out with different skippers to gain the best knowledge of different boats and how people sail them. Each person has their own way of approaching a race. I enjoy the process of learning.  This is video is about 6 knots. Not bad for a 22'!

Suspended Beach House Overhanging the Beach

Sometimes you can get a great shot without even thinking much about it. On my way down to help an orphanage, some information below, I came across this very nice beach house to take a picture. What I love about it is that there are horses walking the beach below. I didn't think about it until after the picture was taken. Apparently I have selective attention. The Journey Creates Happiness

We spend a great proportion of our time trying to find happiness. Some of us do it through buying things, some through working hard, some through friends, and some through minimization. Happiness isn't any of those things alone. Happiness is the journey where goals and appreciate for the present make the biggest impact on how we feel. There is something about having a goal and enjoying the process that creates happiness. If you have no goals you don't really have much to motivate you everyday. Goals should also be worthy your effort. You will want something that gets you excited each day to wake up, get out of bed, and get moving. Its seems that happiness can be found in the process of wanting to accomplish something that seems to make a big difference in our lives. It is the forward cognition focused on a better future mixed with a focus each day that puts annoying little things in perspective. Yet accomplishing goal after goal doesn't make one happy. We must

3 Ways of Getting Hired Almost Every Time

Landing the job is important for people. It is a way in which we pay for our daily expenses as becomes wrapped into the way we view ourselves. Employment is more than just money as it takes on a new form of identity. You will want to grow in your jobs like you grow in your life. If you are trying to take a step up with a new job there are three great ways you can ensure you can get hired. 1.) Communication: From the clothing you wear to your body language you are communicating a message. Make sure your resume is free from errors and you are looking good so that your message is accurate.  2.) Experience: People will want to ensure that you have the skills needed to succeed in this job. Highlight that experience which is most relevant to the employer.  3.) Reputation: Most jobs are filled by people we already know or have received a referral. Make sure that you keep your reputation strong and engage with your classmates.

Writing Media for Different Audiences in a Social World-A Few Good Tips

The mood of this picture might sell insurance or safety equipment but not sun tan lotion. :) Writing has an important influence on marketing. Writing well for your audience and media channel helps companies to increase sales. At its core marketing is communication. Nothing more or less. Marketers share information about their products as directly to interested parties as they can. Learning how to write helps to improve sales.  You will also need to find your demographic and use their preferred technology so as to best reach them with the least amount of distraction. People are not always open to new information so we should consider how we are reaching them and what we are saying. Modern writing has changed to match new technologies. Using the proper language for that media (i.e. text vs. traditional writing) makes a difference its ability to get through the "noise". The channel will often depend on who your audience is and how they like to communicate. The Impact of

A Few Hidden Pics of the Forest-In Pictures

I have to admit. I'm a little bit of an outdoor enthusiast and like to take my Cannon out on a hike. I've been learning to change around my setting better to get nicer shots. This was off of the beaten trail at a slow running waterfall. A tranquil place where you can sit for a while.

My Very First Dive Class-Methods of Overcoming Situational Fear

For years I rolled around in the back of my head getting an diver certificate. From the earliest days I used to watch TV ads with wonder how people would explore places unknown to discovery something new. I've had plenty of opportunities to get a certificate but either didn't have the money, time, or decisiveness. Then one day I found a discounted price at a local place and I signed up. A little sheepish with a hint of fear of dragging a lot of heavy equipment into the water I stood contemplative. "If I sink to the bottom this instructor will be able to help me". I looked at the 160 lb instructor and my 200 lb weight and thought, "OK he can't lift me! I'm a goner!". We don't just head into the water without a little lecture. That would be unsafe. Good news is that if I needed to dump the items I could with a few release levers. "I guess I can get out of this if I'm sinking", I thought to myself. By the time the lecture and pra

Early Morning Hiking and Fishing

One of the best ways to wake up in the morning is to go hiking. While it is cold and the last thing you may want to do is to head out into the woods. Let me say it is also one of the quietest times where few other hikers are out. By the time you really get moving the sun will be peaking through the trees. Animals and wildlife are just waking up from their night slumber. They are out searching for food and finding mates. You can still smell the wet grass and freshness as you make your way down the trail. Off in the distance white tail deer are fleeing your approach. Because hiking doesn't always get you enough exercise it can be helpful to enhance your hiking workout by either using a backpack with some weights or doing high knees as you walk. It may look a little silly but you will get your heart pumping without limiting the enjoyment of nature. Once finished with my hike I decided to catch breakfast (I didn't...the little thieves stole my worms). I stopped by a lo
